The Beijing
Protocol

A practical guide for moving through Beijing with fewer wrong turns.

3-DAY GUIDE · READY

Palaces, the Great Wall & old streets

Three full sightseeing days with live AMap handoffs and recovery options.

BEFORE YOU GO

Make all three days easier.

Prepare the bookings and transport choices that can stop a route before you leave your hotel.

Monday ruleUse Day 2 as the Monday anchor

The Palace Museum and the Temple of Heaven’s main sights normally close on Mondays, except statutory holidays. The Temple park grounds remain open. If Monday falls inside your trip, put the Great Wall on Monday and move Days 1 and 3.

Lighter version: skip the Jingshan climb and go directly from Shenwu Gate to Shichahai-Qianhai.

How I’d Do Mutianyu

  1. 1ArrivalReach the confirmed service-area or coach meeting point.
  2. 2ShuttleUse the scenic shuttle for the internal transfer toward the access area.

  4. 4Walk the wallChoose a comfortable ridge section and leave enough time to retrace or descend.
  5. 5Optional: toboggan downA fun ending when it is operating and fits the ticket plan. It is never required.
  6. 6ReturnShuttle back, then return to the meeting point you saved before going up.

Optional only. Confirm same-day operation, rider restrictions and the separate ticket at the official desk before riding.

ALTERNATE ROUTERail matters more? Choose Badaling before departure+

DAY ENDING

Back in Beijing

Dinner, a shower and an easy evening. There is no extra stop to complete.

“I choose Mutianyu when the wall deserves the whole day.”— Cyndee
BACKUPWeather or transport breaks the plan+

Do not improvise a same-day switch to Badaling unless tickets and transport are confirmed. If rides pause, shorten the wall section and keep the booked return.

Check the official Mutianyu notice ↗

PAUSE HERE

Look back along the ridge.

At your turnaround point, pause before retracing your steps and notice how the wall follows the mountain rather than flattening it.

“Let Beijing change scale before you leave it.”— Cyndee
BACKUPThe temple or your energy changes the plan+

If the temple’s main sights are closed, use the park grounds for 45–60 minutes and continue to Qianmen. If you are tired after Beijing Fun, end there and leave Yangmeizhu for another day.

Notice where the street becomes residential.

On Yangmeizhu, find one doorway or sign that shows old neighbourhood life beside newer cultural uses. Keep entrances clear.
