01 · WHEN TO GO
Begin with the national calendar
A low international airfare can still place the rest of your trip inside a domestic travel peak. Mark the official holidays before you choose cities, trains, or hotels.
New Year
1–3 JanuaryExpect a compact travel peak around the three-day break.
Spring Festival
15–23 FebruaryFamily travel and the wider Spring Festival travel rush can affect transport well beyond the official holiday.
Qingming Festival
4–6 AprilA three-day break that can increase regional and scenic-area demand.
Labour Day
1–5 MayOne of the busiest periods for domestic leisure travel and major attractions.
Dragon Boat Festival
19–21 JuneA three-day break; local events can be the reason to go rather than a reason to avoid it.
Mid-Autumn Festival
25–27 SeptemberA family holiday that sits close to the National Day travel period in 2026.
National Day
1–7 OctoberA full Golden Week with high transport and attraction demand.

02 · WEATHER BY REGION
China does not have one best month
Choose the city and the experience first. Then compare historical climate with the forecast for your exact week.
Beijing · Xi’an
Spring and autumn can reduce temperature extremes, while winter and summer offer stronger seasonal character with more weather trade-offs.
Shanghai · Suzhou · Hangzhou
Humidity, rain, and summer heat matter as much as the headline temperature. Check the city and exact week, not only the month.
Guangzhou · Shenzhen
Heat, humidity, heavy rain, and tropical-weather disruption need to be checked against your dates and route.
Chengdu · Chongqing · mountain regions
Lowland cities and high-altitude destinations should not share one weather assumption. Elevation can change conditions quickly.
Historical climate describes patterns, not your travel-day forecast. Recheck severe weather, heat, rain, and high-altitude conditions shortly before departure.
03 · SMART SAVINGS
Save the money that bad planning wastes
This is not a cheapest-possible-China list. The biggest avoidable costs often come from the wrong week, too many city changes, a false transport comparison, or a room that is cheap but badly located.
Book the route after the entry check
Confirm the policy for your passport, purpose, ports, and onward route before committing to transport or accommodation that cannot be changed.
Count city changes, not only hotel nights
Every extra city adds checkout, station or airport travel, waiting, arrival, and another check-in. A shorter route can protect both budget and usable time.
Compare door to door
For train versus flight, include the trip to the terminal, arrival buffer, baggage, and the trip into the next city—not only the ticket price.
Price the hotel location
A cheaper room can cost more after daily transport and time. Compare two areas on the same dates, room type, and cancellation terms.
Change rail plans early
China Railway’s current refund table becomes more expensive closer to departure. Recheck the official rule before changing a live booking.
Pay for one tested system plus a backup
Choose connectivity and payment tools around the tasks you need. Avoid buying overlapping solutions simply because each one is called essential.
04 · BEFORE YOU LAND
Seven systems to test before departure
A booking confirmation proves that you bought something. It does not prove that the full task will work when you are tired, offline, or standing at the wrong entrance.
Entry
Check the exact passport, purpose, stay, ports, onward route, and permitted travel area.
Internet
Choose roaming, an eSIM, or a local SIM according to trip length and whether a Chinese number is required.
Payment
Prepare mobile payment, a physical card, and a small RMB cash backup; test the actual merchant-payment task.
Maps & rides
Test place search, public transport, ride-hailing pickup, and translation on your own device.
Trains
Compare the official 12306 route with third-party service, then save the passport and booking details used.
Accommodation
Save the Chinese address, front-desk details, booking record, and carry the physical passport used for registration.
Offline backup
Keep essential confirmations, addresses, reservations, charging, and emergency payment available when the phone or network fails.

07 · FAQ
Questions worth answering before you book
Should I avoid every Chinese public holiday?
No. Avoiding a holiday can reduce booking pressure, but a festival may also be the experience you want. Decide whether lower friction or the event itself matters more.
What is the single best month to visit China?
There is no useful nationwide answer. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, and high-altitude destinations can have very different conditions in the same month.
Is the 240-hour policy the same as a ten-day tourist visa?
No. It is a visa-free transit policy with nationality, port, onward-route, and permitted-area conditions. Verify the complete route on the current official source.
Do I need both Alipay and WeChat Pay?
They can provide useful redundancy, but mobile payment is not the only legal payment method. Foreign visitors can also use supported bank cards and RMB cash in applicable situations.
Are the 2027 holiday dates included?
No. This page will add 2027 dates only after the official schedule is released. A 2026 video will not be relabelled as a 2027 edition without a new verification pass.
