The skyline is only one version of Shanghai.
Shanghai makes modern urban China visible in layers: the historic old-city edge, the creeks and bridges of its river-port history, and the infrastructure and vertical scale of Pudong.
The useful contrast is not simply old Shanghai versus new Shanghai. It is the walking layer between them—where commercial history, working waterways, bridges, and present-day urban scale can be read without turning the city into a skyline checklist.
02 · WHO IT SUITS
Choose Shanghai for the urban layer your trip needs.
Shanghai is strongest when its city energy and gateway role serve the route—not when fame chooses the city for you.
- Your limited China time is mainly for imperial or ancient history, slow landscape, or rural rhythm.
- You want a low-planning retreat rather than a dense, high-movement city.
- You are adding Shanghai only because it is famous, while the trip already has more city energy than time.

03 · HOW MANY DAYS
Three full days is the clearest first version.
With two, protect only two contrasting layers. Do not compress Shanghai and a regional day trip into the same first-city promise.
Keep the historic old-city layer, then choose either the river-port walk or Pudong-scale Shanghai. Do not rush all three or add a regional day trip by default.
Protect one day each for historic old-city Shanghai, the Suzhou Creek–Waibaidu–North Bund corridor, and Pudong’s contemporary urban scale.
Add one chosen interest—museum and art, food and design, or a separately planned regional extension—rather than padding the skyline checklist.
04 · A FIRST-TRIP ROUTE
Three layers, not three icon piles.
Give each day one city scale and one anchor before adding anything else.
DAY 1Historic old-city Shanghai
Yuyuan / old-city edge
Start with Yuyuan only after checking the current session and entry notice, then keep one compatible nearby layer. Do not add Nanjing Road or the Bund merely because they are famous; the river and bridge story has its own day.
Yuyuan Garden, Yuyuan Garden Malls, daytime entry, evening programmes, and festival zones do not share one permanent workflow. Check the exact place, ticket, gate, session, re-entry rule, and opening notice for your date.DAY 2River-port Shanghai at walking scale
Postal Museum exterior → Suzhou Creek → Sichuan Road / Waibaidu Bridge → North Bund → stop
Use the Postal Museum as an exterior-first starting point, then follow the creek-and-bridge layer toward North Bund. The route works when every interior is closed. Stop at North Bund instead of manufacturing a seamless ferry-and-Pudong finale.
The Postal Museum interior is optional and has limited opening and entrance rules. Any museum, café, ferry, or Pudong venue requires its own current check and is not part of the default walk.DAY 3Contemporary urban scale
One verified Pudong cultural anchor → one short riverfront layer
Choose one anchor first—Shanghai Museum East is the current documented option—then add a compact Pudong or riverside layer. Do not assume a museum, several towers, a long walk, and a cross-city return all fit because the Metro connects them.
Ordinary individual admission to Shanghai Museum East is currently reservation-free with an original valid ID through the B1 East Gate. Special interactive spaces and ticketed exhibitions use separate rules; recheck opening, entry, exhibition, and flow-control notices for your date.DAY 2 · CHOOSE THE ENDING
North Bund or a ferry crossing?
The ferry is not the next stop after North Bund. It is a different branch that replaces North Bund and needs a deliberate move south to the correct pier.
North Bund
Continue from Waibaidu Bridge to the North Bund waterfront, then stop. This keeps the route geographically coherent and useful even when every interior is closed.

From the Suzhou Creek / Waibaidu area, move south along the Bund to East Jinling Road Pier, take the Dongjin line to Dongchang Road Pier, then choose one Pudong layer. This replaces North Bund. Confirm the current daytime schedule first.
